The sub-variant BA.5 of Omicron that has just entered Vietnam is believed to spread faster, but it is unknown whether it causes more severe disease. However, a point of interest to many people is that BA.5 can cause disease in people who have been infected with Omicron variants before.
BA.5 and BA.4 sub-variants of Omicron continue to be detected in 62 and 58 countries, respectively, indicating a general trend of global expansion.
In our country, currently sub-variant BA.2 accounts for mainly with mild clinical manifestations. However, the new subvariant entering BA.5 could potentially overwhelm the old variant. "Up to now, a number of countries in Europe and the US have appeared sub-variants BA.4, BA.5 and have started to have an increase in the number of cases"- Prof. Dr. Phan Trong Lan emphasized.
Regarding the spread of the two sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5, the world is currently continuing to evaluate. However, some early small-scale evaluations suggest that these two subvariants spread more rapidly than variants BA.1 and BA.2.
Regarding the ability to cause severe disease, there is no specific evidence, but some studies show that there is an aggravation in the African region.
