DNHN - The European Chamber of Commerce commits to supporting Ho Chi Minh City in its green transition by sharing knowledge and expertise.

On January 24, at the conference calling for investment for green growth development in Ho Chi Minh City, Ms Marieke Van Der Pijl - General Secretary of the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (EuroCham) committed to supporting Ho Chi Minh City in the green transition process soon.

In a meeting with the Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Phan Van Mai, Ms Marieke Van Der Pijl highly appreciated Ho Chi Minh City’s leading role in the national economy, especially its significant contribution to Vietnam’s GDP. However, she also recognised the negative impact caused by the economic downturn in Vietnam and globally in recent years.

Ms Marieke particularly appreciated the decision to implement Resolution 98 of the National Assembly on piloting specific mechanisms and policies for the development of Ho Chi Minh City, emphasising that this is an important turning point for the sustainable development of the city. According to her, these mechanisms not only support the fight against climate change but also position Ho Chi Minh City as an advanced city with environmental awareness.

The EuroCham General Secretary stressed that opportunities have opened up from these mechanisms, especially in encouraging rooftop solar power projects and trading carbon credits to contribute to the city’s budget. However, she also noted that to implement these solutions practically, Ho Chi Minh City needs a specific plan, especially regarding the process of land allocation, compensation, and land use adjustment.

Ms Marieke also mentioned Vietnam’s commitment at COP26 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and switch to renewable energy sources. EuroCham is committed to supporting Ho Chi Minh City in the green transition process by sharing knowledge and expertise.

Ms Marieke Van Der Pijl emphasised the importance of developing Ho Chi Minh City not only as an economic centre but also as a beacon for sustainable and environmentally responsible development. EuroCham also announced plans to organise the EuroCham Green Economy Forum and Exhibition (GEFE) in October in Ho Chi Minh City in 2024.
