Dong Thap discussed with foreign organizations to promote sustainable agriculture

DNHN - Rikolto International proposes the Low Carbon Rice Project in Dong Thap, which expands and strengthens Rikolto's sustainable rice program through the use of regenerative agriculture.
On April 3, the provincial and facility leaders of Dong Thap met with leaders and experts from Livelihoods Funds and Rikolto International. Specifically, Rikolto International is an aid organization for Dong Thap that will implement the project "Developing a sustainable and inclusive rice value chain for small farmers" in Dong Thap over the course of two time periods: 2018-2021 and 2022-2026.

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee of Dong Thap, Nguyen Phuoc Thien, stated that the project has yielded numerous positive outcomes in Dong Thap, including an increase in farmers' incomes and a reduction in water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Dong Thap is the Mekong River's upstream province in the Mekong Delta. Consequently, the province has resolved to continue promoting the development of sustainable agricultural farming systems in the direction of "favorable nature," thereby constructing a green, circular agriculture and enhancing the agricultural sector's value. The province of Dong Thap hopes that Rikolto International and Livelihoods Funds will continue to collaborate and assist the province in achieving this objective.
A representative of Rikolto International proposed the low-carbon rice project in Dong Thap to provincial leaders. Particularly, will expand the scale and strengthen Rikolto's sustainable rice program with regenerative agriculture, having 15,000 hectares of SRP rice (applying the alternating flood and dry method correctly and completely) within five years, with 30 cooperatives and 10,000 farmers.
Simultaneously, test 1,500 hectares of regenerative agriculture in rice cultivation by employing techniques such as no-till, direct seeding, cover legume planting, and other methods to improve the "health" of the land.
