DNHN - From May 11 to 17, at the invitation of US President Joe Biden, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will lead the Vietnamese delegation to the ASEAN-US Special Summit, as well as visit and work in the United States and the United Nations.
The ASEAN-US Special Summit in Washington, D.C., is an important event, according to Assoc. Prof. Dr Vu Minh Khuong, lecturer at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (National University of Singapore).
To begin with, this is the second ASEAN-US Special Summit since the first in 2016; it is the first face-to-face gathering of ASEAN and US leaders in 5 years, since 2017. This gathering also marks the 45th anniversary of ASEAN-US ties since their inception in 1977.
Second, as planned, the ASEAN-US Special Summit will address several critical and pressing topics in the context of the world's ongoing attempts to recover from the pandemic's devastation. COVID-19 and the upheaval generated by the Russo-Ukrainian conflict.

COVID-19 pandemic recovery and global public health; battling climate change; economic growth; maritime security; and resource development will be discussed. individuals, foster human engagement and share thoughts and viewpoints on regional and global issues. The Conference's main goal was to strengthen ASEAN-US relations for the benefit of people, peace, and prosperity.
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr Vu Minh Khuong, the meeting demonstrated the United States' strong interest in developing the strategic foundation with ASEAN, and ASEAN leaders took a new step in becoming conscious of the special relevance, especially to deepening ties with the United States.
A university professor stated, "The ASEAN-US Special Summit is intended not only to launch numerous new projects but also to lay the groundwork for the strategic ASEAN-US partnership." Singapore's nationality was stressed.
According to a National University of Singapore professor, Vietnam has swiftly emerged as a key driving factor in advancing the ASEAN-US strategic alliance.
Vietnam's economy has seen a particularly fast expansion in commerce with the United States. Vietnam contributes to over one-third of the bloc's total trade value with the United States, with a total trade value of more than $90 billion in 2020.
In terms of contributing to the solution of major global issues, Vietnam is progressively making a distinctive contribution. In this context, it's important to mention that the US and DPRK will meet in Hanoi in 2019 and that Vietnam will send several elite troops to join the UN's international peacekeeping force.
According to Mr Vu Minh Khuong, Vietnam is becoming more essential in fostering the deep and strategic growth of ASEAN-US ties. Our nation has unique assets in both potential and kinetic energy in this endeavour.
In terms of potential, Vietnam is a nation of approximately 100 million people that is situated in a position of significant complementarity and interaction to play a vital role in fostering ASEAN prosperity. Vietnam, in particular, is the second country after Japan to go from being at odds with the U.S. to be on good terms with it.
Dr Vu Minh Khuong said, "Vietnam is a convincing example for the rest of the world to see that a country's true and deep relationship with the United States can still lead to major successes in the public sector, even though there are many differences."
Our country has made great progress in economic reform, global integration, and widening ties with the US. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown Vietnam's crisis management and post-epidemic resilience. It is catching up with global trends, fostering green growth and digital transformation while boosting human resource quality and modernizing the government system.
"In my perspective, Vietnam and the US will achieve considerable progress together as their trust improves, aided by their mutual assistance during the COVID-19 outbreak." Dr Vu Minh Khuong noted, "Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's summit visit and working tour to the United States, as well as Vietnam's ambition to attain net-zero emissions by 2050, would significantly boost future ties between Vietnam and the United States."
