DNHN - O Mon District (Can Tho City), which was formerly solely an agricultural area, is progressively evolving into a sophisticated industrial metropolis to become the industrial hub of Can Tho City and the Mekong Delta's important economic region by 2045.
Imprints of the 20-year growth journey
The leader of O Mon District (Can Tho City) told the reporter of Business and Integration Magazine that the area was formerly entirely agricultural, had a low economic base and a sluggish rate of development, small-scale industrial - handicraft production, trade, and services, a lack of technical infrastructure, and many challenges in people's daily lives. Nonetheless, O Mon District has accomplished numerous remarkable accomplishments in a variety of disciplines over the past 20 years thanks to the efforts of the people and the administration, which have significantly and completely altered the local appearance.
Specifically, up to now, O Mon District has had a relatively high economic growth rate; the economic structure continues to shift in the right direction, gradually forming an economic structure of high-quality industry, trade services, and agriculture (the proportion of the industrial construction sector accounts for 65.57%, the trade-service sector accounts for 30.84%, and the agricultural - aquatic sector accounts for 3.59%).
The district's industrial - handicraft production develops in the direction of high science and technology, and production capacity increases strongly; creating a transformation in productivity, quality, and efficiency in the production and business activities of enterprises, solving jobs for many local workers, and the people's living standards are increasingly improved and enhanced.
In particular, the district has implemented many solutions to support people and businesses in overcoming difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to creating favourable conditions for developing production and business. Therefore, the value of industrial production increases annually, estimated to reach VND 24,686 billion by the end of 2023 (59 times higher than in 2004).
The trade and service sector has developed strongly in the direction of diversifying types and expanding the exploitation of potential business locations. The whole district currently has more than 10,134 trade and service establishments, creating jobs for about 18,971 workers.
O Mon's agricultural production is gradually shifting towards concentrated, high-quality specialised farming, focusing on applying scientific and technological advances in production, harvesting, and preservation to improve economic efficiency and increase income for workers. Up to now, there have been 02 Cooperatives in the District supplying products on the e-commerce floor. Along with that, 04 durian growing areas have been granted export codes to China with a total area of 48.5 ha; 02 products are recognised as 4-star OCOP.
The annual budget revenue of the District always meets and exceeds the targets assigned by the city; budget expenditure always ensures the right plan, savings, and efficiency. Many construction works and projects have been completed and put into operation, bringing into play the effectiveness; The resettlement area, the commercial residential area, and essential infrastructure works have been invested in and upgraded, making the urban appearance of the District increasingly spacious and more complete. Some key projects with breakthroughs are being implemented, such as Building O Mon District Conference Centre, Can Tho City's Western Ring Road, and Provincial Road 923, contributing to creating a foundation for urban development.
Currently, O Mon District has 79/79 areas that meet the standards of cultural areas; 07/07 wards meet the standards of civilised urban wards. Besides, the district has 05 relics classified at the city level.
According to the leader of O Mon District, the above results are achieved thanks to the Party and State having many correct policies and guidelines. The District is interested in leading, supporting, promptly removing difficulties, and creating the most favourable conditions in implementing the tasks by the City Party Committee, People's Council - People's Committee, departments, and agencies of the city. The District People's Committee is also always proactive in building programmes and plans to organise effective implementation, mobilising the combined strength of the entire political system and local people.
Gradually becoming an industrial centre of Can Tho City
In the coming time, O Mon District People's Committee will continue to mobilise the combined strength of the entire political system and local people to synchronously implement solutions to build and develop O Mon District in the direction of a civilised industrial urban area, with an economic structure of high-quality industry - trade - services - agriculture.
The district aims to become a civilised, green, clean, and beautiful urban area by 2045, with a modern urban structure, characteristic of an industrial city. This place will become an industrial centre associated with the development of high-quality services, a modern urban area of Can Tho City and the key economic region of the Mekong Delta.
To accomplish the above goal, O Mon District People's Committee will continue to organise the serious and effective implementation of the Resolutions and Directives of the Central Government and the city; maximising the potential and advantages to develop the District's socio-economic situation.
In particular, encouraging and creating favourable conditions for people and businesses to participate in investing in developing production and business; prioritising the development of industries and products with high added value, competitive advantages, attracting many workers associated with developing services, developing agriculture, developing urban areas, and protecting the environment.
Along with economic development, O Mon also ensures social security, builds a cultural lifestyle, and civilised urban areas, improves people's intellectual level, awareness, and responsibility, improves the quality and effectiveness of cultural activities, and builds and perfects O Mon people according to the criteria of Can Tho people "Intelligent, dynamic, benevolent, chivalrous, elegant".
