DNHN - When people mention Trà Sư Cajuput Forest, they immediately think of an expansive green area, about 850 hectares in size, located in Tịnh Biên District (An Giang).
This is considered a typical freshwater wetland forest in the Western Mekong Delta, a sanctuary for many species of birds, storks, and rare animals that come here to dwell.
During the flooding season (around July to October in the lunar calendar), Trà Sư "wears a new coat," with patches of water lilies covering the surface like a green carpet, and flocks of birds flying in groups, creating a waterway scene that is unique to the Mekong Delta. In the spring, it is magnificent, cool, and vibrant with the colors of countless flowers.
A genetic reservoir
However, the true value of Trà Sư lies in its role as the "green lung" and its rich genetic resource. The roots of cajuput trees and the aquatic vegetation help stabilize the soil, absorb organic pollution, and agricultural chemicals, while providing shelter for a diverse range of wildlife.
Moreover, for the people of An Giang in particular and tourists in general, Trà Sư is also a cultural symbol of the Mekong Delta: simple, gentle, and nurturing the spirit through soulful folk songs and cải lương (traditional Vietnamese opera).
Preserving the forest, preserving the soul of the Mekong Delta
Through generations, the Mekong Delta has been the birthplace of soulful melodies of the South, from traditional music to heartfelt folk songs. The image of people rowing boats through the cajuput forest, watching flocks of storks and herons return to their nests, has become ingrained in the memories of many. To preserve the spirit of places like Trà Sư, we cannot be complacent about climate change. We must act quickly to prevent erosion, land subsidence, and ecological degradation.
Therefore, preserving Trà Sư Forest—and other freshwater wetland forests in the Mekong Delta—is also about maintaining the "cushion" that absorbs and distributes floodwaters, minimizing erosion risks, and protecting the valuable ecosystem for both the present and the future.
Preserving the forest is not just about maintaining green spaces; it is about preserving a part of culture, memory, and hope. As Trà Sư welcomes spring, the forest dons a new coat and continues to thrive, just like the enduring vitality of the land of nine dragons.
