- Carbon credits have become an important issue in the global tourism industry. How do you see the impact of carbon on Vietnam's tourism sector?

Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan:

Over the past decade, carbon has become a common trend in the tourism industry. Tourists are increasingly concerned about environmental issues, so destinations that focus on the environment and sustainable development often have a competitive advantage in the tourism sector.

Focusing on environmental sustainability helps improve competitiveness and build a brand in the market. This means that businesses must comply with sustainable development trends to avoid falling behind, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, which has significantly changed tourists' demands.

In today's tourism industry, sustainable development includes environmental protection, building a circular economy, reducing carbon emissions, and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. These are essential factors that play a significant role in providing a good environment and quality for tourists. Businesses in the tourism sector need to implement these types of sustainable practices as part of the national strategy for tourism aimed at sustainable development.

- As one of the fastest-growing tourism countries, what challenges does Vietnam face in reducing carbon emissions in the tourism industry?

Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan: In my opinion, the biggest challenge currently facing the tourism industry in reducing carbon emissions is the lack of awareness, which needs to be raised along with strong action. This requires unity within the community, not just among tourism businesses but also within management organizations and the local population. Everyone needs to share the same direction to promote sustainable tourism development.

Another challenge is protecting and preserving natural resources during tourism development. Additionally, addressing the issue of resources, especially financial resources, is necessary. To implement sustainable development and green growth models, businesses need investment resources. While large enterprises may have these resources, small and medium-sized businesses often face difficulties. Therefore, financial support from management levels needs to be increased.

Moreover, local governments also need to invest, such as in building wastewater and waste treatment systems at tourist destinations. This requires specific and practical actions, consistent with international environmental commitments.

- What carbon reduction measures can be applied in Vietnam's tourism industry, and will they have a positive impact on the sector's development?

Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan: As mentioned earlier, to implement measures to reduce carbon emissions, the participation of businesses, the public, and the government is necessary. Particularly important is the application of green growth models and the circular economy, as well as the use of renewable energy. Businesses need to invest in renewable energy production in their tourism activities.

Additionally, modern waste treatment systems at tourist destinations are essential, as environmental discharge directly affects the environment.

Furthermore, providing clean water is a crucial factor, requiring a synchronized water supply system. All these activities need to be invested in systematically to reduce net emissions in the tourism sector. Reducing emissions is not only a task for the tourism industry but also a vital part of protecting the environment and natural resources. This benefits not only businesses in the tourism industry but also society as a whole.

- How do you view the trend of carbon reduction and sustainable tourism in Vietnam? Will it continue to develop and drive change in the tourism industry?

Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan: I see that the trend of reducing carbon emissions and developing sustainable tourism in Vietnam is making significant progress and is expected to continue to develop in the coming years. Recently, the government has introduced many policies and plans to promote the development of green tourism and reduce carbon emissions. For example, the Vietnam Tourism Development Strategy to 2030 mentions the goal of developing sustainable tourism, applying green technology, and minimizing environmental impact. In addition, many localities are implementing initiatives such as building environmentally friendly tourism infrastructure, encouraging the use of renewable energy, reducing waste, and minimizing single-use plastics.

This trend is receiving increasing interest and support from tourism businesses. Many hotels, resorts, and travel companies are proactively implementing measures such as using renewable energy, managing waste efficiently, and offering high-sustainability tourism products. This not only helps protect the environment but also meets the growing demand of tourists for green tourism.

I believe that the trend of reducing carbon and developing sustainable tourism will continue to be strengthened in the coming years, promoting positive changes in Vietnam's tourism industry. With the efforts of the government, businesses, and the public, Vietnam can become a green and sustainable tourist destination, contributing to global environmental protection.
