HCMC is seeking new growth drivers through cooperation on talent, institutions and data as artificial intelligence transforms economies and global value chains.
The 2026 Autumn Economic Forum (AEF 2026) began its thematic discussions and technology demonstrations on October 27, bringing together policymakers, experts and businesses to examine how Vietnam and the region can adapt in the A.I. era.
Opening the sessions, HCMC People's Commitee Vice-Chairman Nguyen Cong Vinh said that the Forum's main theme - Cooperation In a New Era - was more than a slogan. Economies, localities and businesses are reorganizing value chains and reassessing whether the growth drivers of the past two decades can sustain the next two.
Citing the World Economic Forum's Future of Work 2025 report, Mr. Vinh said the world could create about 170 million jobs and lose 92 million by 2030, while 39% of workers' skills could change or become obsolete.
"Value will belong to economies that know how to prepare the people, institutions and data quickly enough. How will we all respond in this A.I. era?", he remarks.
He highlighted three shifts: uncertainty has become a basic condition, making adaptability as important as scale; no economy can independently build all the data, technology, capital and talent it needs; and megacities are emerging actors in multinational cooperation alongside nations.
Regarding the all-day schedule, the program of October 27 in the AEF 2026 agenda comprised five sessions on repositioning Vietnam and ASEAN in global value chains; ESG and the circular economy; A.I. adoption and the future manufacturing workforce; A.I. applications in megacity and industrial governance; and A.I.-based sovereign capabilities.
HCMC Vice-Chairman Nguyen Cong Vinh said the Forum should extend beyond the significance of a single locality and serve as a platform to jointly new frameworks, initiatives and partnerships that deliver shared benefits for the region and beyond. The city leaders also expects five sessions to turn dialogue into practical cooperation, expand international ties and support sustainable regional development in the digital era.
