DNHN - In the first nine months of the year, total passenger throughput at airports across the nation increased by 20% compared to the same period last year.

The Vietnam Aviation Administration reported that airports across the country welcomed 89 million passengers in the first nine months of 2023, a 20% increase over the same period in 2022. International passenger output increased by 266.8% to reach 23.7 million, while domestic passenger output decreased by 3.6% to reach 65.2 million.

20.3% more passengers were transported by Vietnamese airlines compared to the same period in 2022. The number of international passengers increased by 300.2% to reach 11.5 million, while the number of domestic passengers decreased by 3.6% to reach 32.6 million.

According to the Vietnam Aviation Administration, five Vietnamese airlines currently operate 67 routes connecting Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang to 19 other local airports with over 650 daily flights. In addition to increasing the frequency of existing routes, Vietnamese airlines operate several new routes, including Can Tho-Van Don and Hanoi-Ca Mau.

The international air transport market is continuing to maintain recovery momentum for most traditional markets (except China and Russia) and the presence of several new markets in Central Asia. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan are examples.

In addition, Vietnamese Airlines expanded their flight operations to India and Australia.

There are currently 64 foreign airlines and 5 Vietnamese airlines exploiting the international market with over 169 international routes connecting 28 countries and territories in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa to Vietnam's destinations including Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Cam Ranh, Phu Quoc, Da Lat, and Hue. Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia, and India are among the ten international markets from which Vietnam receives the greatest number of international passengers.

Airport cargo throughput tends to decrease as the passenger market grows. In the first nine months of the year, the total market for aviation cargo decreased by approximately 18%, reaching 762 thousand tonnes.

Cargo output through airports decreased by 15.3% to 887.5 thousand tonnes. The amount of goods transported internationally decreased by 24% to reach 637 thousand tonnes, while the amount of goods transported domestically increased by 19.5% to reach 250.4 thousand tonnes. The output of goods transported by Vietnamese airlines increased by 8.7% to 230 thousand tonnes.
