The International Labor Organization - ILO - urges Vietnam to phase out coal use gradually

DNHN - According to the International Labor Organization, "a critical region of fair transition" is required to gradually phase out coal usage in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) in Vietnam has lately confirmed to the Vietnamese press that coal is the fossil fuel with the highest carbon content. As a result, the use of this fuel should be phased out fast to reduce global warming to 1.5°C (as stated in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement).

The ILO suggests establishing a "fairly transition focal region" in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam to progressively phase down coal usage.

According to the International Labour Organization, these three nations have the largest coal use in Southeast Asia. Over the last 20 years, coal consumption in this region has climbed by 150 per cent, with coal's share of overall power production capacity growing from 27 per cent in 2010 to 43 per cent in 2019.

Indonesia and Vietnam are major coal producers, however, the Philippines relies significantly on coal imports. Climate change threatens all three countries.
