The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) has just released data from Vietnam Customs indicating that Vietnam's exports of pangasius increased in September 2023, the first increase since the start of the year. The value of exports reached nearly 167 million US dollars, a 1% increase from the same period last year.

Vietnam's exports of pangasius decreased by 31% during the first nine months of the year, reaching nearly USD 1.4 billion. The most exported item is still pangasius under code 0304 (excluding fish cakes and surimi), which accounts for 82% of total exports.

Concerning consumption markets, VASEP reported that in September 2023, exports of Vietnamese pangasius to China, the European Union, Brazil, and Mexico increased significantly. During the same period last year, markets such as the United States, CPTPP, Korea, and Singapore experienced a decline ranging from 3% to 54%.

Notably, China remains the leading import market for Vietnamese pangasius, with import turnover reaching 56 million USD in September 2023, a 15 percent increase over the same period in 2022. The value of exports to China decreased by 26% in 2023 compared to 2022, reaching 434 million USD.

The United States ranked second in pangasius imports from Vietnam, with a 29% decrease compared to the same period last year. Large inventories in the United States are the greatest obstacle, resulting in a steady decline in export value to this market since the beginning of the year. In September 2023, exports to the United States reached 207 million USD, a 54% decrease from the same month in 2022.

VASEP reported that the EU market grew in September 2023, indicating that demand in member nations has not diminished. This month, the EU consumed over 14 million US dollars worth of Vietnamese pangasius, an 11% increase over the same period last year and a 9% increase over the previous month. In the first nine months of 2023, EU imports totaled 129 million USD, a 19% decline from the same period in the previous year. With positive growth in September 2023, the EU gradually resumes competition with Vietnam for pangasius imports.

The CPTPP market's decline has been slowed to 4% in September 2023, with export value reaching 21 million USD. Notably, several CPTPP bloc markets, including Japan, Mexico, and New Zealand, have experienced significant growth ranging from 10% to 70%.

According to VASEP experts, the recovery in pangasius exports to some major markets in September 2023 is a good sign for the global economy, which is projected to expand. Low as a result of a decline in aggregate demand, political instability, and concerns about food security, natural disasters, and climate change, issues that are gaining in significance. Shortly, it is anticipated that signs of recovery in the final quarter of 2023 will generate momentum for Vietnam's pangasius exports.
