The number of Vietnamese tourists to Japan has increased dramatically

A recent announcement by the Japan Tourism Promotion Agency (JNTO) in Vietnam revealed that the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan in August reached 50,900, representing a 16.5% increase over the same period in 2019 and a 54% increase over the same period in 2018. 2022. In the first eight months of the year, there were 397,000 Vietnamese visitors to Japan, a 17.4% increase compared to the time before the epidemic. In the first eight months of the year, the top six international tourist markets to Japan were Korea (4.3 million), Taiwan (nearly 2.6 million), the United States (1.3 million), mainland China (nearly 1.3 million), Hong Kong (nearly 1.3 million), and Thailand (580,000). Vietnam and the United States are two of the seven largest customer markets with positive growth compared to the same period in 2019. The remaining five markets are all declining.

JNTO noted that Vietnam is one of the markets with the highest recovery rate and growth rate of visitors to Japan.

Among Japan's seven largest tourist markets over the past eight months, Vietnamese visitors grew by 17.4% more than before the epidemic. In addition to Vietnam, there is also the United States (14%). Other significant Japanese markets, such as China, decreased by 81%, Thailand by 28%, Taiwan by 22%, Australia by 13%, and Korea by 8.6% during the same period.

According to JNTO, the Japanese tourism industry is implementing a number of policies to attract foreign visitors. JNTO will host "Visit Japan Travel & MICE Mart 2023 (VJTM & VJMM 2023)" in October of 2023. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, this is the first time the event has been held exclusively in a live format, inviting buyers from all over the world to exchange, network, and participate in survey trips. The Japan Tourism Board said that the number of international visitors to the country in the first 8 months of 2023 reached 15.2 million, down 31% compared to before the pandemic.

International flights to six major Japanese airports (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Sapporo) have recovered but are still 26% lower than in August 2019; the number of empty seats is also 25% lower; Nagoya airport has reduced the number of flights and seats by as much as 62%.

In the opposite direction, the number of Japanese tourists travelling abroad was 1,2 million in August 2023, surpassing 1 million for the first time in a month since the outbreak of the pandemic, but the number was still 43% lower than in August 2019.

Therefore, international flights departing from six major airports in Japan decreased by 25.8%, to 17,031 flights, and the number of empty seats decreased by 24.9%, to 4 million.
